Patch 8.3 PTR - Corrupted Gear Guide
Corrupted gear is a new system being implemented in Patch 8.3 that effectively replaces titanforging. It is not a permanent system, but will be used through the entirety of patch 8.3.

Basics of the Corruption System
  • Gear from all season 4 sources will have a chance to drop "corrupted", meaning it comes with:
    • A corruption stat, indicated in the item's stats in purple.
      • This adds to your corruption level. As this rises you will start to receive negative affixes that happen to you in combat.
    • An equip bonus that provides a benefit to your character also indicated in a purple equip bonus description on the piece of gear.

Corruption Level
  • A new UI element on your character screen (a N'Zoth eye) will show you the following when moused over:
    • Corruption - Corruption Level before Corruption Resistance.
    • Total Corruption - Corruption Level with Corruption Resistance.
    • Corruption Resistance - How much resistance your cloak/essences reduce from Corruption.
    • Negative Corruption Affixes - Your corruption level debuffs will also show as active here as well.

Negative Corruption Affixes
If your Total Corruption level passes certain thresholds, your character will also gain a negative affix. Each threshold stacks a new negative affix with the previous ones, which creates a risk/reward system for equipping corrupted gear. You will likely want as much bonuses as possible without getting your corruption level too high.

  • 1+ Total Corruption - Grasping Tendrils - Taking damage has a chance to slow your movement speed for 0 sec. The magnitude of the slow increases with further corruption.
  • 20+ Total Corruption - Eye of Corruption - Your spells and abilities have a chance to summon an Eye of Corruption for 8 sec. The Eye inflicts increasing Shadow damage to you every 2 sec while you remain in range. Range and damage increase with further Corruption.
  • 40+ Total Corruption - Grand Delusions - Taking damage has a chance to summon a Thing From Beyond, which pursues you for 8 seconds. Its speed increases with further corruption.
  • 60+ Total Corruption - Cascading Disaster - If you are struck by the Thing From Beyond, you will be immediately afflicted by Grasping Tendrils and Eye of Corruption.
  • 80+ Total Corruption - Inevitable Doom - All damage taken is magnified and healing received is reduced, increasing with further Corruption.

Corruption Resistance
Over the course of the patch you will eventually be able to wear more and more corrupted items without reaching negative Total Corruption thresholds by increasing your Corruption Resistance.

  • Equipping your Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve legendary cloak will give you corruption resistance. As you increase the rank of your cloak, you will also increase your corruption resistance.
  • The new essences in 8.3 have passive corruption resistance included when equipped.

When an item drops, it will randomly be assigned a bonus effect. That bonus effect can come in three different tiers. The higher the tier, the stronger the effect, but also the more corruption gained.

You unlock this ability by receiving your first corrupted item and getting the quest Curious Corruption. which has you head back to the Chamber of Heart and speak to Wrathion and MOTHER. From this moment on, MOTHER will have an option to purify items when talking to her, which brings up a new UI. Placing a corrupted item into the slot and using 5 Corrupted Mementos will purify the piece.
