Early access to the new Demon Hunter class will be available starting August 9 to those who have pre-purchased the Legion expansion and have at least one level 70 character on their realm. To help you prepare for your new role as one of the Illidari, we’ve sent scouts into Mardum to learn more about this powerful hero.
To begin your training, Game Designers Eric Maloof and Graham Berger team up to take you through the features of the Demon Hunter in this class preview video.
One of the newest recruits to the Illidari, you’ll begin your journey at level 98 in demon infested Mardum. As you make your way through this dangerous land, you’ll begin to learn the skills of a Demon Hunter, their history, and become proficient in harnessing the power that goes along with your chosen path. Be warned – not every Illidari makes it through. Ask yourself this question —What are you willing to sacrifice to save Azeroth from the Burning Legion?
Before you make your character, you’ll need to know a little bit more about this hero class. In order to create a Demon Hunter, you’ll need to have at least one level 70 character on your account. You’ll also need to choose between two races within the character creation screen – Night Elf or Blood Elf. To take part in the early access for the Demon Hunter, you’ll also want to purchase the Legion expansion, though everyone who purchases the expansion will gain access when Legion releases on August 30.
Here are just some of the great abilities you’ll have to look forward to when you embrace the ways of the Illidari:
Spectral Sight: Demon Hunters’ blindness belies their true powers of perception. They rely on magically augmented sight to detect enemies—even those that hide behind obstacles.
Metamorphosis: Demon Hunters transform into hellish forms, enhancing their formidable powers. Damage-focused Illidari gain incredible swiftness and damage allowing them to finish their prey, while those who prize defense become nigh invincible in their demonic forms.
Demon Hunters also possess supernatural mobility: They can double-jump, vault in and out of combat, and even glide with their wings unfurled to unexpectedly descend upon their prey and surprise enemies from above.
Learn even more about the Demon Hunter by watching the Developer Q&A Part 1 and Part 2 with Senior Game Designer Jonathan LeCraft.
You are now a little more prepared to be the hero Azeroth needs against the Burning Legion. Good luck on the battlefield—even with such power at your disposal, you’re going to need it.

There’s a World of Warcraft: Legion pre-expansion patch coming soon, and that means a great number of changes and improvements will be finding their way into the game. We’ve recently outlined several reasons to get ready for it all here and here.
Today, we’d like to take a closer look at the some of the content that will be coming to Azeroth in the weeks after the pre-expansion patch.
Incursions and Diversions
Around the second or third week of August (no later than August 17 globally), after you’ve had time to play around with the patch and get a feel for the changes, some angry invaders are going to start dropping out of the skies over Azeroth.
You’ll be able to identify where the invasions are currently happening by looking at your world map. As quickly as you can, head out to the zone that’s under attack and lend your aid to the defense of Azeroth.
Each demon invasion takes place in four stages, and each stage ends with a reward of Nethershards—and sometimes a chest. That means it’s always a good time to rush out and fight the Legion.
A week after the invasions begin, the Legion’s assault will begin to intensify. Then, a week after that, the demonic onslaught will intensify even more, increasing your chances to complete the event-only achievements Stand Against The Legion (for completing one invasion) and Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions (for completing invasions in all six locations).
Loot Intensifies
When you participate in demon invasions and receive Nethershards, you’ll want to hold on to them. Collect enough, and you can spend them on all sorts of transmogrification armor (there will be four ensembles available: cloth, leather, mail, and plate), new pieces for your neck, fingers, back, and trinket slots, as well as the event-only Felbat Pup battle pet, among and other useful items.
Speaking of weapons, you’ll always want to open the chests you obtain from demon invasions, as they have a chance to drop one of 16 event-only weapons, such as Niskaran Morning Star or Staff of the Inquisiton. At item level 700, these weapons might be more than a transmogrification collection item for you—they might be the perfect thing to pick up and swing at the face of the nearest demon!
Remember to Share
One more item that we’d like to tell you about is a new toy that will be available during the Demon Invasions: the Pocket Fel Spreader. It’s not actually a good idea to leave it in your pocket, but it is a great idea to figure out how to obtain one of these tainted trifles—because this may be your only chance.
For Azeroth!

Legion - Dark Whispers Event
Players in Stormwind and Orgrimmar will be turned against each other as the Legion invades.
- During Beta testing, players in Stormwind or Orgrimmar would randomly hear whispers offering them untold power for their services. This may work differently on live.
- Players then have 5 abilities and 9 stacks of Frail Mind.
- Turn Ally - Impart Dark Whispers into the mind of an ally after 10 sec. Using this ability will out you as an ally of the Legion for 15 sec. Removes one stack of Frail Mind.
- When you are visible as an ally of the Legion, the guards will attack you.
- Cloak of Darkness - Vanish into the darkness for 20 sec.
- Hysteria - Cause hysteria in a group of targets, making them fight with allies for 10 sec. Using this ability will out you as an ally of the Legion for 15 sec. Does not affect targets that have been recently marked.
- Illusionary Guise - Take on the guise of a target. This includes most NPCs, even High Overlord Saurfang.
- Once all 9 stacks of Frail Mind are removed, you can use Give In To Darkness and become a Dreadlord for a minute!
- Becoming a Dreadlord greatly increases your health and gives you raid boss power level abilities (this was not working on beta when the footage below was recorded)
- During testing on Beta you could right click to cancel the whispers.
- Other players cannot see the whispers buff on you.
Legion - Demon Invasion
The Demon Invasion event is going to slowly ramp up as we get closer to Legion release.
Invasions
- Several zones are going to be invaded: Tanaris, Westfall, Northern Barrens, Hillsbrad Foothills, Dun Morogh, and Azshara.
- Each invasion is a zone wide scenario entered by any character that moves in to the invasion area.
- Each scenario has 4 steps:
- Defend against an invasion at a specific point, such as the Orgrimmar Rear Gate or Tarren Mill.
- Defeat two lieutenants and a commander.
- Defeat the various invading forces marked on the map. This seems to be a zone wide objective, with progress going up as you kill NPCs.
- Defeat a boss NPC at the original invasion point. This boss is challenging and will require a group.
- For the first week, invasions will happen every four hours in a couple of the more remote invasion zones.
- This will increase 300% every week for two weeks until all of the invasion zones are active all of the time.
- Invasions will start in the more remote zones like Tanaris and then move to zones closer to the main cities.
Rewards
- Completing the scenario rewards Stand Against the Legion.
- Completing all of the invasion scenarios rewards Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions
- You can also obtain Large Legion Chest and Small Legion Chest.
- The chests can contain Nethershard and item level 685 armor and item level 700 weapons.
- The weapons can be upgraded to item level 725 with Coalesced Fel.
- Doing each scenario will reward you with some Nethershard
- Killing a Dread Infiltrator is a good idea, as they have a chance to drop Pocket Fel Spreader
